Geirskögul, Valkyrie of Shaking Spears, Brings Fury to the Field
Story by Thomas Denmark · 423 readers
Geirskögul boosts nearby allies, unnerves foes and senses conflict from a mile away. Her profile gives game masters a clear battlefield role.

Geirskögul is built to change the feel of a fight before her spear ever lands. Her once-per-battle gift raises nearby allies’ attacks and morale, while enemies who witness their charge may falter. Add the ability to sense armed conflict within a mile, and she becomes a figure whose arrival can shape an encounter before initiative begins.

A presence that changes the encounter
Her defining ability, Shaking Spears, can be used once per battle. For three rounds, allies within 60 feet gain +2 to attack rolls and Morale. Enemies who witness the charge must save versus Spells or take a –1 penalty to attack rolls for that same duration. The effect rewards careful positioning: Geirskögul needs allies close enough to benefit, and the opposing side must be able to see the charge for the penalty to apply.
That makes her more than a powerful individual opponent. Put her beside a group of warriors and she can make their opening push much more dangerous; place her in view of the enemy line and that same moment may shake the opposition’s confidence. The rules give the ability a short, defined window, so the encounter’s pace matters. Once she calls the charge, both sides have three rounds in which to respond to its effects.
Her profile supports that commanding role. Armor Class 20 and 72 hit points give her staying power, while her spear attack deals 1d8+3 damage at +10 to hit. She can switch to a sword, which attacks at the same bonus and deals 1d6+3 damage. The spear hits harder, while the sword gives the encounter a close-range option if the distance closes. Her high Dexterity, 21 with a +4 modifier, fits a combatant who can move quickly through the scene.
Fast movement and a warning of conflict
Geirskögul moves 120 feet on the ground and flies 180 feet. That difference gives a game master room to stage her arrival overhead, carry her across a battlefield, or let her keep pace with events from above. Her flight can also make the 60-foot range of Shaking Spears a useful tactical consideration: she may need to descend or draw allies together to bring them within the ability’s reach.
Battle Sense broadens her role beyond direct combat. She can detect the presence of impending battle or armed conflict within one mile. The profile doesn’t specify how precise that awareness is or what details she receives, so a game master can keep the signal simple: Geirskögul knows that conflict is near, while the party’s choices determine what they learn about its source. This gives her a reason to appear before the first weapon is drawn and lets her function as a warning, an omen or a force trying to steer events.
Her statistics also leave room for different kinds of interaction. Intelligence 14 and Wisdom 16 provide a basis for portraying her as perceptive, while Charisma 19 gives her an imposing presence. Those numbers don’t prescribe her words or decisions; her stated nature as chaotic good and her role among the Valkyries provide the more useful starting points for a game master shaping her motives.
The Valkyrie’s place in the story
Geirskögul, whose name is glossed as “Spear-Shaker,” is described as a fierce Valkyrie who stirs warriors to battle. She wears an ebon dress, carries a long war-spear and rides above the field, selecting the bravest fallen for Odin’s halls. Her appearance heralds a clash whose outcome is about to turn. That image gives the mechanics a strong narrative frame: the warriors’ surge is the sound and sight of her influence, not simply a temporary adjustment to their rolls.
For a game master, the most effective use of Geirskögul may be to make her presence felt in stages. Battle Sense can mark the approaching trouble; a glimpse of her in the sky can announce that the conflict has drawn her attention; then Shaking Spears can turn a charge into the encounter’s defining moment. Her profile works best when the players can respond to that build-up and decide whether to join, resist or redirect the coming fight. With her speed, flight and brief but potent group effect, Geirskögul can serve as a memorable combatant or the signal that a larger clash is about to begin.
