Hervör Alvitr, the Valkyrie of Wisdom: D&D Stats and Abilities

Hervör Alvitr stands out among valkyries through the way she shapes a scene: she reads what others miss, steadies allies, and offers guidance before danger takes hold. She can fight when pressed, but her defining strengths are wisdom and judgment. For a game master, that makes her useful as more than a formidable opponent. She can serve as a source of hard-won counsel, a guardian of a pivotal choice, or a powerful ally whose help comes with a clear view of the risks.

Hervör Alvitr

“The Strange Wise Creature” is an Aesir demi-goddess and medium humanoid with a lawful good alignment. Her pale, steady gaze and composed manner distinguish her from more openly warlike valkyries. She is associated with knowledge, foresight and fate, and her advice tends to be brief, direct and unexpectedly accurate. She prefers to influence events through understanding rather than force, though she is a capable combatant when a peaceful answer fails.

Her statistics give her the resilience to remain present in a dangerous encounter. She has Armor Class 19 from divine mail and a shield, 10d8+20 Hit Dice, and 65 hit points. Her BHB is +8. She moves 120 feet (40 feet) on the ground and flies 180 feet (60 feet), giving her room to reach an ally or change position quickly.

In a fight, Hervör attacks with a spear at +9 for 1d8+2 damage or a sword at +9 for 1d6+2 damage. Her saves are D3 W4 P4 B5 S7 (F10), and her morale is 10. She is worth 2,800 XP. Her ability scores are Strength 15/+1, Dexterity 17/+2, Constitution 14/+1, Intelligence 18/+3, Wisdom 29/+7 and Charisma 17/+2. The standout Wisdom score fits her role: her most distinctive influence comes from perception, foresight and support for those around her.

Abilities that shape an encounter

Hervör’s Insight lets her see through illusions, lies and enchantments as if under a true seeing effect. Once per turn, she can also grant an ally within 30 feet a +2 bonus on a saving throw against mind-affecting magic. These abilities make deception a poor way to sway her, while giving nearby companions a practical defense against mental threats. A game master can use Insight to make her the first character to recognize that an apparent scene is false, or to signal that a speaker’s account does not ring true.

Her protective presence extends to everyone on her side. Allies within 20 feet of her Aura of Calm gain a +2 bonus to morale checks and saving throws against fear or charm. The radius creates a useful positioning detail: companions benefit by staying close, while a threat that separates them can weaken that support. When planning an encounter, this gives the group a clear tactical question without requiring Hervör to dominate the action.

Her spellcasting supports both investigation and response. At will, she can use Detect Magic, Detect Evil and Light. Three times per day each, she can use Dispel Magic and Clairvoyance. Once per day, she can use Commune. Her Runes of Foresight can also be used once per day to cast the runes of Odin for guidance, with the combined effect of Divination and Augury.

Using her as a guide or a foe

Hervör’s abilities naturally suit scenes where the party must assess uncertain information. She can notice magic, look into a distant place, challenge an illusion or seek guidance through runes. Those tools can help a game master move a mystery forward, but the source describes her answers as concise rather than expansive. Keep her counsel focused: she may clarify a danger or point toward a choice without resolving every question for the characters.

As an ally, she can strengthen a group facing fear, charm or other mind-affecting magic while still holding her own in a fight. Her flight and strong defenses make her mobile, and her spear or sword gives her a direct response when an enemy closes in. As an adversary, her foresight and ability to see through deception make familiar tricks less dependable. The encounter can instead turn on the party’s choices, coordination and ability to contend with her protective aura.

Her calm temperament offers a useful contrast to her combat statistics. She need not open a conversation with threats or speeches; a brief observation, a steady look or a practical warning can communicate her nature. Let the group see her judgment at work through what she notices and how she helps. Hervör is most memorable when her strength serves her insight, leaving the party to decide what to do with the truth she brings into view.
